Cell phone dangers

Posted on April 17, 2008.

With the increasing number of stories about brain tumors and cell phones and their possible complicity in confusing the radar system of honeybees I was beginning to feel increasingly uncomfortable with my own aged cellphone (“wow – this thing is ancient said a guy at the phone centre of my vintage Y2K model).

So I gave it up.

Although inconclusive, reports have been coming out of Europe since the mid 1990s about the negative health effects of cellphone use, but anecdotal reports on chatlines charge cellphones with making people sick from headaches, nausea, eye, jaw and neck pain, extreme irritability, confusion, burning sensations in the face and ears, and extreme fatigue, and in the worst cases, tumors and cancers.

Dr. George Carlo, Ph.D, a public health scientist, epidemiologist, and lawyer who headed the research division of the wireless industry between 1993 and 1999 is now one of the industry’s most vocal and distinguished opponents - the classic whistleblower. Dr. Carlo called the proliferation of man-made radiation “potentially the most significant health threat society has ever faced.”

A report in last year’s Health Action Network Society (HANS) journal reporting on a talk given by Dr. Carlo convinced me that corporate manipulation of information and regulatory issues could cost me my health and was surely costing society at large on many different levels – health being an important and obvious one, but environmental and economic and community welfare sacrifices are also implicated.

For those who need to be further convinced, Carlo can be heard on Vancouver Co-operative Radio (102.7 FM) from 1-2 pm on Wednesday April 23rd. He will also be speaking again in Vancouver on Friday May 2nd, 7 pm at St. Andrew’s Wesley Church in Vancouver (corner of Smithe and Burrard). Tickets are $20 for HANS members and $25 for non-members. For more information, see Health Action Network’s site

Next week, I’ll tell you about the joys and challenges of making the transition to life without a cellphone.

Apparently if you put an egg between two mobiles, and leave it there a couple of hours it will be cooked. Read this some where.

Yeah - I heard that story. I was all excited at first but then after I thought about it for a few minutes I thought it must be a hoax - and sure enough - it was.

Here’s the article that got people talking. Check out the comments that show the experiment couldn’t be replicated and that the author came forward and admitted it was all a hoax.

Good for a laugh though!
